Fresh from becoming the first Kiwi to be appointed to a leadership position at London’s Royal College of Music, Jonathan Lemalu is on his way back to Arrowtown.

The 49-year-old was late last month appointed deputy head of the vocal and opera department at the college, one of the most prestigious music schools in the world — it’s thought he’s the first Samoan to hold a position like that in the northern hemisphere.

From Dunedin, Lemalu’s a graduate of the University of Otago and the Royal College of Music, where he’s been a professor of vocal studies for the past two years. He’s gained an international reputation and has won multiple awards.

Last in the Whakatipu in February, where he performed at Arrowtown’s Ayrburn alongside Edward Laurenson and Deborah Wai Kapohe, Lemalu’s returning to Arrowtown’s Athenaeum Hall on Thursday, November 13.

It’s a specially-curated ‘memory lane’ event, organised by the Arrowtown Creative Arts Society and supported by Bayleys Arrowtown.

Tickets cost $85 plus fees for ACAS members, or $95 plus fees for non-members, via eventfinda.
