A trio of North Otago pupils took part in a basketball showcase event last weekend.
The College Park Classic was held in Christchurch with a full day of basketball action.
Waitaki Boys’ High School students Maddix Curry and Boston Cathcart, alongside St Kevin’s College student Archer Holding, were all selected for the under-17 rising stars invitational games.
Four teams were selected, with the three North Otago players ending up in separate teams.
Ian Cathcart coached all three as part of the North Otago under-16 team that went to nationals earlier this year.
He said it was a great opportunity to further their development.
"It was really good for those boys to put themselves in a situation where [they played] the best guys from around the South Island for that age and those three guys certainly held their own and performed pretty well.’’
He likened the event to NBA All Star Weekend with a dunk competition, half-court shooting competition and a celebrity game.
"It basically went from 9am until, I think we got away 10.30pm.’’
Not be left out, Cathcart, a former professional basketballer himself, also took part in the charity match and even took home the game’s MVP.
"All those boys actually came back and supported and watched.
"It was quite neat for them to watch. I know my kids haven’t really seen me play much.’’
