Moller arch decision on Monday

The fate of a 95-year-old Ravensbourne memorial might be determined next week.

The Dunedin City Council will decide whether the Moller Park Memorial Arch should stay or whether to consult the community on options.

The arch was built in 1920 to honour former West Harbour mayor, councillor and Otago Harbour Board member Hagbarth Ernest Moller.

Removal and replacement of the arch was proposed by the Chalmers Community Board in June last year.

Community board deputy chairman Trevor Johnson said the arch's position at the entrance to Moller Park had been a concern for years.

There had been one accident when a driver crashed into the monument in 2011.

''The arch is just in the wrong place,'' he said.

The board wished to see a smaller memorial within Moller Park and called on the council to consult the community on this option.

The arch was not a protected heritage structure and Heritage New Zealand had no position on whether it stayed or went.

''In terms of our view on the memorial, we just wanted to encourage a well-considered decision-making process to ensure all the options had been considered before a final decision,'' Heritage NZ Otago and Southland area manager Jonathan Howard said.

The committee would decide whether to retain and maintain the arch or to consult the public on options on Monday.
