Cromwell Lions Golden Golf co-organiser Garry Morton said last year’s tournament raised more than $56,000 and they were hoping to better that.
"It’s a proven track record with what we do here. We know we’re going to make money."
This year’s project was the Molyneux Educare Centre outdoor playground renovations.
Centre manager Nicole Shaw said they had raised $45,000 but to achieve their dream for the children would take about $100,000.
"We’ve been fundraising for a long time. Many cheese rolls have been made."
Quotes of up to $200,000 had been received but because it was a community-based centre they hoped to involve as many of their "really talented" parents as possible to keep costs down.
"We’re looking to be really smart about the way that we [fund this] and, because we’re community-based, we also wanted to use the community.
"We’ve got really talented parents and members of the community, businesses, and we wanted to be able to use the community and our parent community to be able to create this playground.
"It will be probably more time consuming but I think we’re going to be able to make some smarter decisions with how we spend the money."
Due to limited space on the centre’s site thoughtful playground design was essential to ensure the children had access to challenge, creativity, movement and exploration, Mrs Shaw said.
"We are really thankful for this opportunity, because there’s no way that we would have been able to think as big as what we’re able to without being the recipient of this, so we’re just really very grateful."
Mr Morton said the naming rights sponsor was Aotea Electric and other businesses would contribute by sponsoring holes and offer cash or products and services to Molyneux Educare.
As well as the 30 teams of four playing golf there would be a golf ball drop, with 3000 balls sold and prizes for the first five in the hole.
There were novelty events throughout the day and an after-match auction to boost the coffers.
The tournament was on November 8 and already about 20 teams had registered, he said.
