He was Bruce Robert Wilkins, 34, of Christchurch.
The crash involving one vehicle happened on the Taramakau Highway (State Highway 6), just north of Kumara Junction in Westland, about 5.30am on Friday.
No one else was in the vehicle.
In a statement tonight, police said inquiries into the circumstances of the crash were continuing.
"Police extend our deepest condolences to Bruce’s family and friends during this difficult time."
