People will gather at Cape Wanbrow (Makotukutuku) Lookout early on Friday for a dawn ceremony to mark Matariki.

The cluster of stars which rises in midwinter is known as Matariki in Te Reo Māori, heralding the start of the new year.

Te Hā o Maru is organising this year’s hautapu ceremony in partnership with the Waitaki District Council.

People will gather at Makotukutuku from 6.15am, followed by the hautapu ceremony and kōrero from astronomer and astrophotographer Damien McNamara at 6.30am.

There will also be special Matariki kai at St Joseph’s school hall at 7.30am.
