SBS chief risk and innovation officer Mark McLean has been appointed interim chief executive of the Invercargill bank, replacing Wayne Evans who died suddenly in Queenstown last week.

SBS chairman John Ward said in a statement Mr McLean was a capable man who held an executive position with the bank at present.

In addition to his five years in executive management with SBS, Mr McLean previously held financial services leadership roles in the United Kingdom, Singapore, the Netherlands and New Zealand.

During the past 18 months, the SBS board and executive team had been working on achieving their long-term strategy which endorsed the vision of the SBS becoming New Zealand's "member bank''.

The strategy was now in education mode, he said.
