There was no hint of a wobble or hesitation as Cardrona motorcycle stuntman Ian Soanes wheelied his way down Baldwin St, Dunedin, to the cheers of a crowd of about 3000 on Saturday.

"That was much harder than I thought," the man they call the "Wheelie King" said when he made it to the bottom of the world's steepest street.

The 55-year-old celebrated his successful stunt with a wheelie back up the street, but doing wheelies was much harder coming downhill, he said.

He could feel his two-stroke 250cc Suzuki enduro bike was gaining speed, but did not want to use too much rear brake in case he overheated it.

He was inspired to tackle the stunt after people who came to the Cardrona Adventure Park he owned and operated kept asking him "when are you going to do Baldwin St"?

During a 30-year stunt career he has jumped monster trucks, over aeroplanes and through burning double-decker buses, claims to have been been the first person to wheel-stand a tractor, and performed leaps on motorcycles.
