In Dunedin, motorists were warned to take care due to widespread black ice. Mount Cargill was closed due to snow and Three Mile Hill was closed due to ice.

Police attended a number of crashes this morning in Dunedin due to the icy conditions.

In Queenstown, extreme caution was advised after overnight snow, and chains were needed in many areas off the main routes in the Wakatipu.

Crown Range had snow from the Zig Zags to the Passing Lanes near Cardrona, and there was compacted snow at Arthurs Point Rd, Queenstown Hill, Fernhill, Glenorchy Rd to 12 Mile then patches of snow elsewhere.

Frankton, Arrowtown, Lake Hayes all had compacted snow and ice. Kawarau Gorge and Gibbston were much the same.

In Central Otago, high country areas experienced light snow, particuarly in Roxburgh and the Maniototo areas as well as parts of Manuherikia.

There was a high risk of ice in these areas as wet roads and freezing temperatures were present, so caution was advised.

In Alexandra and Cromwell there was a moderate risk of ice forming.

Police warned motorists in Otago and Southland to be careful in icy conditions, and said black ice had caused several crashes this morning.

Sergeant Tony Ritchie said officers had received about 10 reports of cars losing control on the ice and sliding into parked cars, some of which were parked in "dangerous positions" on steep roads.

"The conditions are still pretty poor out there. It's starting to clear and the sun's heating the roads. We still don't want people taking unnecessary trips."

Mr Ritchie advised people to stay at home if possible. He said snow last night in the city had frozen, creating the treacherous conditions.

At Queenstown Airport, flights were put on hold early this morning due to icy conditions.

They resumed at 11.30am, but delays were expected to continue throughout the day.

Dunedin bus services

The Opoho service is terminating at The Gardens due to black ice, the Otago Regional Council reported.

The Abbottsford service will only be travelling along North Taieri Road - it will not be travelling the Exmouth-Dall-Neill Street block due to black ice.

The Port Chalmers service will not be travelling via Roseneath or St Leonards Drive. From Port Chalmers to town it will be travelling via Highway 88 to the Sawyers Bay roundabout.
