Proposed 120-minute parking limits in Ranfurly’s business area have been rejected.

The response from Maniototo Community Board members was lukewarm at a meeting in Ranfurly on Thursday.

The Central Otago District Council had proposed to amend the roading bylaw to include 120-minute parking restrictions in Charlemont St (State Highway 85) from John St to Pery St, and Pery St (SH85) from Charlemont St to Northland St.

Council acting roading manager Martin Alford told the meeting the proposal came as a result of a request from the Ranfurly Business Group.

Board members questioned the need, and Sue Umbers said the size of the town meant it did not warrant restrictions.

"We’re tiny, do we need it?"

Board deputy chairman Mark Harris said any restrictions would be be cosmetic if they could not be enforced.

Stu Duncan said the signage required would only clutter the main streets.

He had polled businesses and the response was "50:50", he said; that meant it was unlikely the restrictions would pass if the proposal was opened for public consultation.

Board members agreed to amend the proposal to go back to the council to include no change to existing parking restrictions.
