The Central Otago District Council has approved funding five extra private hangar and accommodation sites for Alexandra Airport.
At a meeting yesterday, the council's water and property infrastructure committee agreed on an overspend of $218,000 to fund the infrastructure for the sites.
Council property officer Tara Bates said the sites were being developed because of extra demand.
To supply water to the new sites, a bore water supply would have to be installed.
The current supply for the airport was from a shared bore on a residential property at the corner of Coates and Dunstan Rds but this would not have the capacity to provide water to the extra five sites.
The proposal was to drill a bore with a 10,000 litre-per-hour pump beside the terminal building. It would provide 120,000 litres a day for the airport.
That would provide enough capacity to boost further development at the airport and it could provide irrigation for the site.
The $218,000 cost would be funded by a 20-year loan. The project was not expected to affect ratepayers.
