Auction a big hit for Plunket

A large auction has seen the Alexandra Plunket gain $5000 for its coffers.

President Tracie Handford said the auction, held on Sunday, was Alexandra Plunket's biggest to date.

When the committee considered raising money for extensions to the Plunket rooms, it was decided having one large event would be easier because many of the parents worked.

A large variety of donated goods was sold, some piece by piece, with the larger items auctioned.

The committee is planning to open up rooms in the Plunket building to provide a space parents can rent cheaply for children's birthday parties.

Included in the auction was a 1954 Wolseley 4/44 which had been in the extended Mitchell family since it was bought new in 1955 by Clyde Sarginson. He drove it for 25 years and then sold it to his daughter, Judith, wife of Peter Mitchell.

Mr Mitchell said the car had been great for teaching his five children to drive. He had it repainted 18 years ago in its original British racing green and the motor had done only 4000 miles since being completely overhauled.

The car was given to Plunket to auction but the reserve was not reached and so it has been returned to Mr Mitchell.
