A Danish couple's New Zealand holiday got off to a soggy start when strong winds pushed their parked camper van into Lake Dunstan.
The couple had picked up their rental van on Friday and later that day parked it at Lowburn, near the public toilets and boat jetty, and went for a walk.
The vehicle had been parked on a flat piece of land, in neutral, without the handbrake on, Acting Sergeant Allan Trow said.
"It was blowing really strongly that day and the wind pushed the camper van, rolling it into the lake, where it floated for about 50 metres and then sank out of sight."
Police called in a diver who attached a line to the vehicle so it could be towed from the lake and the couple could retrieve their belongings, he said.
The camper van was submerged in about 1.2m of water.
Because the vehicle was left in neutral and without the handbrake on, any damage to the couple's property was not covered by insurance, Acting Sgt Trow said.
