Police were still at the scene of a north Dunedin fire this morning that closed State Highway 1 through the city last night.

Crews were alerted to the fire on Great King St North about 6pm on Saturday.

A nearby motel owner, who alerted emergency services to the blaze, told Stuff he saw smoke and flames "pumping" from the building.

Four fire trucks attended before it was brought under control.

The building is believed to be derelict.

In October last year, 36-year-old Aneli Helu Katea was found dead at the address.

A 25-year-old man, who has name suppression, is due to go on trial for his murder in 2027.

There were no reports of injuries and the road reopened by about 8pm.

A fire investigator had been notified.
