The Vincent Community Board has supported a ''no-brainer'' move to extend the main area of Alexandra's indoor stadium.

At a board meeting in the town yesterday, shearing contractor Dion Morrell spoke on behalf of New Zealand Merino Shearing on a submission to demolish two unused changing rooms at Molyneux Stadium to create an ''off-court area''.

The annual merino shears competition at the venue was not only a large event for the town, but helped keep shearers' skills honed and brought shearers to the area, Mr Morrell said.

It would be celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2021 and wanted to do some ''special things'' and attract more international competition.

''At the moment we're limited by its current shape. We need to evolve.

''The rugby club side has changing rooms that are well used, but the block on the right side is not used.''

There was talk in the town of the need for another stadium, but it was better to first utilise the one Alexandra had, he said.

The group had meetings with other sports groups which were supportive of the plans, he said.

Board member Russell Garbutt said the proposal was a ''no-brainer''.

''They are asking for a modest amount which would give a good return.''
