Bowling club to turn 100

Time is running out for those wanting to help celebrate a century of bowling in Alexandra.

The Alexandra Bowling Club will mark its centenary at Labour Weekend and registrations for the event close at the end of this month Centenary committee convener Bruce Douglas said the club was one of the older ones in Central Otago and he hoped more than 200 people would attend the celebrations.

"We're wanting people to register as soon as possible," Mr Douglas said.

The reunion will take the form of two days of "low key" tournaments, a get-together on Friday, October 23, a centenary banquet the following day and a barbecue tea on the Sunday.

Four bowlers - two men and two women - will dress in period costume for the first two ends of the first tournament.

"They'll be rigged out like they were when they played bowls in the early days, in green and yellow jackets. You should see the hats the women wore - they're like something you'd see at Melbourne Cup day."

The women started off playing croquet at the green next to the men's bowling greens and were eventually allowed to play bowls as well, he said.

The club has a membership of 150, ranging in age from teenagers through to players in their 90s.

It has entered a float in the Alexandra Blossom Festival procession on September 26.

Russell Lambeth has written a booklet about the club's history.
