Bagpipers led people through Clyde's heritage precinct on Wednesday night as the Christmas lights flickered on. Christmas and community spirit was alive and well as about 300 people turned out for the town's inaugural Christmas party.

They gathered on the lawn of the historic Oliver's complex, lured by mulled wine, truffles and carol singing.

For over an hour they sang Christmas classics such as Away in a Manger, Silent Night, Jingle Bells and Feliz Navidad as the light slowly faded.

At 10pm more than 500m of fairy lights flicked on to gasps, cheers and applause.

Organised by the Clyde on Sunday committee, it was a first for the town and the plan was to have it ''bigger and better'' next year, committee member David Ritchie said.
