Orchestra president Christine Williamson said Kurano succeeded Ashley Hopkins, who stepped down after nine years having made a significant contribution to the orchestra’s artistic growth and development.
An award-winning musician, Kurano brought extensive experience to the role, with performances across New Zealand and internationally on violin, viola, and piano.
His appointment marked a new phase for the orchestra which would focus on strengthening artistic standards, expanding programming and deepening engagement with communities across Central Otago, Williamson said.
Widely recognised for his versatility, Kurano had built a career as a soloist, chamber musician, and conductor.
Williamson said the appointment reflected the orchestra’s commitment to both artistic excellence and long-term development.
"Our players are all delighted to be playing under the baton of Rakuto Kurano, as well as being privileged to accompany him as he demonstrates his considerable abilities on the piano and viola."
Kurano said he was honoured to take on the role.
"It is a privilege to be appointed music director of the Central Otago Regional Orchestra. The orchestra has a strong sense of community and a genuine passion for music-making, and I look forward to building on that foundation.
"[Gravitas] is particularly meaningful to me, as it brings together roles I have developed throughout my career. I will be conducting the orchestra, appearing as soloist in the Haydn Piano Concerto and Bruch’s Romance for viola, and leading as concertmaster in the Rutter Suite for Strings."
Gravitas will be performed at the Arrowtown Athenaeum Hall today and on Saturday afternoon at the Alexandra Memorial Theatre.
Tickets are $30 for adults and $25 for seniors. Entry is free for school-aged students and tickets are available at Alexandra Unichem and the Arrowtown Museum, as well as online via Humanitix. Cash door sales will also be available. — Allied Media
