Clyde's underpass is taking shape, with the boxed section running under State Highway 8 almost completed.

Work began three weeks ago on the $500,000 project, which aims to improve safety for cyclists and pedestrians crossing the highway by connecting the town with the rail trail head.

Central Otago District Council roading manager Scott Graham said work was on schedule and the project should be completed by the end of June.

The Clyde School and residents of the town began lobbying for an underpass about 10 years years ago and the Otago Central Rail Trail Trust added its weight to the campaign last year.

More than 700 Clyde residents and rail trail users signed a submission to the council's annual plan last year supporting the underpass.
