Participants at an Alexandra dancing and vege-chopping event won't stop till they get enough as they dice soup ingredients in a disco inferno.

Next Thursday, sustainability group Making a Difference for Central Otago will hold its Disco Soup event, in which participants will simultaneously jive and chop vegetables that would otherwise have been discarded.

The next day, the ingredients will be made into soup and shared at other sustainability events the group is hosting following World Environment Day on Monday.

Co-organiser Sophie Mander said it would be a fun night that would help raise awareness of the problems of food waste.

"When we throw our food waste in a bin, we don't see the harmful greenhouse gases it will release in the landfill.''

Food-waste documentary Just Eat It will be shown on the night.

The Disco Soup concept began in Kenya in 2014 and has since spread globally.

The event will be held from 7-9pm at the Central Otago District Council Chambers.
