Council to help fund museum

The Central Otago District Council decided yesterday to contribute 40% of the $15,900 requested by Central Stories Museum and Art Gallery in Alexandra's Pioneer Park to help run the building in the 2016-17 year.

The museum was asked by the trust which owns the building to chip in after rising insurance and maintenance costs eroded the trust's reserve fund.

The council also agreed to give $89,303 to the Otago Rural Fire Authority to buy an additional rural fire tanker in the 2017-18 year.

A submission asking the council to develop a smoke-free policy, which would have meant no smoking on any council land was discussed but no formal resolution was implemented.

Instead, councillors agreed they would work with health authorities to implement a 10 year smoke-free policy.

A submission by the Central Otago Heritage Trust asked for a levy to support heritage volunteer groups and heritage outcomes in Central Otago was also discussed but there was no resolution on this.

In response to some of the submissions made, the council agreed to review its spending on tourism and economic development in Central Otago.
