People are encouraged to get on their horse or bike or even their own two feet to compete in a rogaine event fundraiser for the Otago Southland Rescue Helicopter Trust next month.

This is not the first fundraiser event for organiser Mandy McFarlane, who ran an Amazing Race-style event raising funds for the trust a few months after she fell off her horse, breaking her neck, near Lowburn Station.

Because of the nature of her injury, she needed a helicopter to get her out of the area and to a hospital, where she spent five days.

The inspiration for this fundraiser came after a fellow rider from the High Country Pleasure Riders broke his ankle during the annual cavalcade earlier this year.

Mrs McFarlane said she hoped to give back for the help the rescue helicopter provided to her fellow rider, and to highlight the importance of the rescue helicopter to the district.

This year’s event would be a rogaine event to open it up to everyone, as it was not just horse riders who might need the rescue helicopter, she said.

A rogaine event is similar to orienteering, where competitors have a map and are looking to navigate to certain points.

Unlike orienteering, however, in a rogaine event participants can go wherever they want, instead of following a set direction.

Mrs McFarlane said all ages could participate, walking, running, biking and on horseback, solo or in a team of two to four.

Two events would be run during the weekend, an adults-only six-hour event on Saturday, November 15, and a three-hour event for all ages on the Sunday, she said.

There would also be weekend camping and horse paddocks available for those out of town wanting to take part.

Participants could win spot prizes with two personal locator beacons being the major prizes as well as a wide variety of vouchers from supportive businesses, Mrs McFarlane said.
