A Cromwell climber is hoping to gain support for an indoor climbing facility with a survey aiming to gather the community’s thoughts on the idea.

Climber Kieran Parsons has launched a campaign to have a climbing facility built in Cromwell.

The feasibility study is funded through Connect Cromwell’s 2023 Winning Ideas fund, which supported community-based ideas which benefit the community.

Mr Parsons said he applied for the fund after seeing the success of an indoor climbing wall in Fiordland.

"We have a fledgling climbing community in Cromwell that has been growing for the last six or seven years," he said.

"I had discussed the idea of an indoor wall to support the local scene with other Cromwell-based climbers.

"I then saw the success of the Fiordland climbing wall in Te Anau and thought that we should be able to make something similar happen in Cromwell," he said.

The survey would give him an idea of the level of support for the community.

"Many people have also reached out to me to say they think it’s a great idea ... I feel like we have strong support already."

The feedback would be used to form a strategic plan and a business plan before looking at fundraising, Mr Parsons said.

Mr Parsons has been climbing for 14 years and taught rock climbing at Cromwell College, where he was a geography teacher.

He said while there were indoor climbing facilities in Wānaka, Queenstown and Alexandra, Cromwell was where the gap was and he was keen to get a wall established to support the local community.

"The vision is for an indoor wall that would cater for all ability levels; from those getting their first experience to athletes training for outdoor climbing goals and national level indoor competitions."

A wide range of community groups could benefit, he said.

"An indoor wall would also be a fantastic option for keeping active during the cold and foggy winter months."

The consultation closes this Sunday.
