Heat detector triggers hospital part-evacuation

Most of Dunstan Hospital was evacuated yesterday afternoon- with the exception of general ward patients and staff - after a heat detector in the facility's ceiling overheated.

Three fire crews, from Clyde and Alexandra brigades, attended the call and Clyde fire chief Richard Davidson said sun beating on corrugated iron above a heat detector had activated the device.

Fire fighters had isolated the detector and re-set the system.

It was an unusual occurrence, Mr Davidson said.

Hospital manager Carol Horgan said insulation that was usually around the device had shifted and it would be repaired immediately.

The hospital had a staged evacuation process and after confirming the detector was nowhere near the general ward, staff and patients remained in the ward, although they were on "standby" to move if necessary.
