Arrowtown's New Orleans Hotel can continue trading for the forseeable future after another deferral of a suspension of its on-licence.

The 10-day suspension - the longest ever ordered in the Queenstown Lakes district - was to start at 8am today, but is now on hold pending the outcome of an appeal to the High Court.

The historic pub in Arrowtown's main street was slapped with the suspension by the Alcohol Regulatory and Licensing Authority (Arla) last month after police caught staff serving alcohol to a 17-year-old volunteer during a sting operation last September.

The suspension's starting date was then deferred until today after Arla considered an appeal by the hotel on March 8.

That allowed the hotel to keep trading on two of its busiest weekends of the year - the Motatapu multisport event on March 10 and St Patrick's Day last Saturday.

The High Court's stay of the Arla decision now means the pub can keep trading through Easter.

Arla ordered the suspension after the hotel's sixth breach of the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act in the past five years. Three of the breaches involved the sale of alcohol to minors.
