A fire has severely damaged a Ranfurly home in Central Otago.

Crews were called to the house in Thomas St about 2.30pm today and the blaze took about 20 minutes to put out.

Two fire units from Ranfurly and one from Naseby attended, as well as police from Omakau.

Ranfurly Volunteer Fire Brigade senior station officer Greg Baddock said no one was inside the house at the time.

However, the occupant's dog sadly died in the fire, Mr Baddock said.

The cause of the fire was unknown but would be investigated, he said.
