A specialised liquor store, part of The Gate accommodation complex in Cromwell, was closed yesterday after a weekend fire, but will reopen this morning.
The Gate general manager Glen Christiansen said carpet cleaners were working at Super Liquor yesterday, and the outlet would reopen at 9am today.
The fire, which was not suspicious, had begun outside the premises and had heavily damaged one storeroom. Carpet and other cleaning was under way to counter other smoke damage inside the building, Mr Christiansen said.
Cromwell Fire Brigade Chief Fire Officer Steve Shaw had said earlier that firefighters were called to the fire at 8.09pm on Sunday.
The fire had burned at the storeroom end of the building and there was significant smoke damage and some external damage, Mr Shaw said.
Mr Christiansen said the affected storeroom — one of several at the premises — would have to be replaced, but the key thing was that no-one had been hurt.
"We can earn money and we can replace stock," he said.
He took a positive view and said, taking everything into account there had been a "favourable" outcome.
Carpeting was "having to be cleaned", and the premises had also been secured.
Mr Christiansen said he was "pretty confident" that trading would continue as usual this morning.
"Tomorrow is another day," he said.
