Louis unleashes his inner demon

Louis Buchanan (10), of Tucker Beach, with the scarecrow he made entirely out of recycled material - mostly found around his property - for the Arrowtown Autumn Festival's Scarecrow Competition yesterday.

Louis dubbed his scarecrow, made with help from his dad, "The Crow Demon".

Its feet were made from old paddles, its head was papier mache and bamboo rods were used to represent a cape.

The demon's wings were made out of an old paint canvas and its hair - fashioned into a mohawk - was made from material growing on a tree at Louis' house which he called "a smoke bush".

It was the first year he had entered the competition, deciding it was "just a fun thing to do".

The 35th annual festival ends tomorrow.

Today's events include the annual street parade, from 2pm.

Tomorrow's programme features the popular Pie, Pint and Pinot festival, and the New Zealand Gold Panning Championships, finals of which will be held from 3pm at Butlers Green. PHOTO: TRACEY ROXBURGH
