Registrations are flooding in from teams who want to take part in the second Central Otago Relay for Life.

The event, being staged at the Cromwell race course on March 17 and 18, was being launched with functions in Ranfurly, Cromwell, Alexandra and Queenstown earlier this week and in Wanaka today.

At every launch, teams have lined up to register and book a camp site for the 24-hour Cancer Society fundraising event. Teams can also register by phoning (0800)233345 or emailing at relaycentral@cansoc.org.nz.

Otago Southland Cancer Society division chief executive Mike Kernaghan yesterday said the event was "about celebrating, remembering and fighting back".

He said the survivors' lap of honour which begins the relay was a highlight, as was the candlelight ceremony at dusk to remember people who have died from cancer.

Teams of 10 or more people take part in a walk along a 350m track during the event. One team member with a baton has to be on the track at all times.

Teams raise funds in the weeks leading up to the event, with their fundraising goal usually reached ahead of time so they can relax and enjoy the festive atmosphere at the relay.

Mr Kernaghan said the money raised would come back to the area and was mostly used in providing support services, with some going to health promotion work and research.

Lynn Manson, of Cromwell, takes over as chairman from Glen Christiansen, who has stepped down from the committee.

"Glen did such a good job last time and it seemed like he truly did the lion's share of the work," she said.

However, she was fortunate to have an "incredibly talented" committee on deck for the 2012 relay.
