A desire to do her bit for the community led to Lisa Davis also helping the Otago Rural Fire Authority to notch up a milestone.

The 48-year-old Millers Flat woman has become the authority's 300th volunteer rural firefighter.

"We're approaching our second anniversary of operating and this is the milestone we're most excited about celebrating; signing up our 300th volunteer rural firefighter,'' authority principal rural fire officer Stephanie Rotarangi said.

"When we started operations on 1 July 2014, the number of volunteers in Otago was 180 firefighters.

"It is well known that change doesn't suit everyone. However, almost two years later, volunteer rural firefighter numbers across Otago are thriving.''

Ms Davis is also a member of the Millers Flat Volunteer Fire Brigade.

The rural fire authority has a base on a site near the Millers Flat fire station.

"Nearly all the fire brigade members here are also rural firefighters so we're all part of the same big team, so I thought, why not become a rural firefighter too?'' Ms Davis said.

"I'd moved here from Dunedin and wanted to be involved in the community and thought this would be a good thing to get involved in and was encouraged to give this a go,'' Ms Davis said.

"Straight away, I felt it was a good fit and enjoyed being part of a team. It works well and they're a good bunch of people.''

She works from home for the University of Otago and is fortunate to be able to juggle her work around fire callouts.

Ms Davis said it was important to have enough firefighters in the area to respond to calls and she was pleased to play her part.

She enjoyed the role and said it highlighted each volunteer's strengths and weaknesses.
