Coming off a dismal 2025 season, the Cromwell rugby coaching team set a target of finishing in the Central Otago top four.
They are on target to supersede that spectacularly after a fifth straight win on Saturday, — against the all-powerful Upper Clutha team, who they beat 21-12 in an enthralling game at Anderson Park.
Not only did it win them the Scott Memorial Shield, played for annually between the two clubs, but it guarantees them top spot going into the second round.
"Yes, top four was our goal," coach Rodger Dawson said.
"It was great to see old timers taking photographs of the trophy on Saturday night.
"Many of our players had trouble recalling the last time they’d beaten Upper Clutha."
It took a massive defensive effort.
Cromwell made the perfect start, prop Tyson Clark scoring from an attacking lineout within 90 seconds of kick-off.
With a 50m goal from Brayden Laing, one of the stars of the day, Cromwell led 8-0 at halftime.
It would not be until the 72nd minute that Upper Clutha hit the front 12-11 from a penalty goal by Oliver Stirling.
Cromwell defended heroically throughout the second half and many were obviously wondering whether they had any energy left.
They sure did. Laing put them back in front with a penalty before captain Stefan Blakeborough completed a memorable day with a try between the posts in the 80th minute.
Many stood out for Cromwell, notably Laing, midfielders Hayden Todd and Rhys Harold, lineout ace Reon Buchanan, skipper Blakeborough and flanker Jack Dunshea.
But man of the match went to pint-sized winger Mike Macrae for his gutsy defence.
Upper Clutha winger Nico Bowering helped get his team back into the contest, creating hooker Cam Page’s try, but it was not to be their day.
They are back at Wanaka next Saturday to defend the White Horse Cup against Wakatipu.
Alexandra, desperately in need of a win, ran in nine tries against struggling Matakanui Combined at Molyneux Park, winning 56-22.
They play Maniototo at Ranfurly in the final game of the round, and need to win if they are to reach the semifinals.
Wakatipu came from behind against Maniototo in Queenstown to win 28-14, their reserves making a huge difference in the second half.
