New co-ordinator 'stoked' about job

Waipiata resident Amie Pont (31) says she is "stoked" to be appointed the Maniototo's first community development co-ordinator.

Mrs Pont's full-time role is funded through the Department of Internal Affairs and she will be employed through Central Otago Reap.

Two main priorities have been set - ensuring the Maniototo communities are cohesive and resourceful and promoting the area as a desirable place to live and visit.

Mrs Pont's role includes creating a database of community contacts, establishing skill and expertise within that database and meeting the social, artistic and cultural needs of local people.

As well, she is responsible for building on the unique identity for the area, heritage development and ensuring community events are successful and well-supported.

"I'm really excited about the job - just stoked," Mrs Pont said.

Her background is in marketing and management and she is a volunteer on the Waipiata Ute Muster committee and also at community radio station Burn.

"I'll have a similar focus to what I've been doing on a volunteer basis in the community, but now I'll have the backing and the budget to be able to develop things further, which is brilliant.

"It's so nice for the Maniototo that Internal Affairs has recognised this area is growing fast and given this funding."

The grant of $240,000 covers the wages of a co-ordinator for three years and includes some funding for community initiatives.
