The tiny historic settlement of Ophir in Central Otago will receive funding from the Government for two infrastructure projects in the town.

Minister for Infrastructure Shane Jones has announced the Ophir Peace Memorial Hall in the former gold-mining town’s main street will receive $210,000 for improvements, including a new toilet block and storage.

Another $60,000 will go to the local community pool to replace the changing rooms and for essential repairs.

The hall was opened in May 1926 and Central Otago Vincent ward councillor Tracy Paterson said it was regularly used by the Ophir community.

The pool was run by volunteers and was open to everyone through its honesty box entry, she said.

Families with young children and tourists on the Central Otago Rail Trail used the pool frequently in the hot summer months, Ms Paterson said.

The funding for the project will come from the $3billion set aside for infrastructure projects in the Government’s Covid-19 Response and Recovery Fund.
