Over Omakau

The small Central Otago town of Omakau, between Alexandra and Ranfurly, grew when the Otago Central Railway was opened in 1904 as a service town to the railway and surrounding rural area.

It is now a popular stop on the Otago Central Rail Trail cycle trail.

Its latest growth spurt has been in recent years as it experienced a housing boom, largely as spillover from the more expensive towns of Cromwell and Alexandra.

The town's only subdivision, just off the main street behind the pub, was built in 2005, though nothing really sold.

By the end of 2016, all 34 sections were gone.

Its domain (top right) is the home of the Central Otago A&P show, usually held in February.

The New Zealand Ministry for Culture and Heritage gives a translation of Omakau as "belonging to husband and wife".
