Central Otago canines could be in for some extra capers following plans to create a "dog park" in the Clyde area.

The area, a 2.9ha piece of a Central Otago District Council reserve between the Dunstan Hospital and Dunstan Golf Course, was already designated a "dog exercise area", but no-one seemed to know about it, Springvale resident Crystal Currie said.

Vincent Community Board and Clyde Recreation Reserve Committee member Russell Garbutt confirmed the land was zoned reserve and designated a dog exercise area, but the public probably did not know about it.

Mrs Currie found out about the area only last year, when she approached the board, asking for a dog park to be established. She was  told of the dog exercise area that already existed.

The board had committed to enhancing the area, and had since improved fencing around the site, and cleared green waste from it, Mr Garbutt said.

Mrs Currie would now like to see the area further improved and promoted, and for some seating, rubbish bins and signage to be installed.

She would also love to see some dog agility equipment put in, such as pipes for dogs to crawl through, and some tree planting. She had been in touch with several businesses and already had pledges of support to provide things for the park.

Mrs Currie and Mr Garbutt said one way members of the public could support improvements to the dog park was to make submissions on the draft Clyde reserve management plan asking for the dog park area to be enhanced.

Submissions on the plan closed on February 16 and it was "not as hard as people think" to make one, MrsCurrie said.

Council acting chief executive Louise van der Voort said about 6000 dogs were registered in Central Otago, about half of which were working dogs.
