Play gear upgrade

Joint funding will hopefully pay for a $140,000 upgrade of the Pioneer Park playground in Alexandra, the Vincent Community Board has heard.

At its meeting yesterday, the board received a report outlining the upgrade, in which all the equipment in the junior playground would be replaced.

Central Otago District Council parks officer Nicola Rae said most of the equipment was old, worn and no longer complied with current playground safety standards, and it had been decided to renew all the equipment at the same time.

The equipment would include swings, a slide, carousel and modular unit with a bridge.

The council had budgeted $100,000 for the project and an application for another $40,000 would be made to the Central Lakes Trust, which had indicated it would support the project, Ms Rae said.

Any old equipment that was still in reasonable condition would be offered for public sale online, she said.

•Changes to fees and charges recommended for council facilities in the Vincent board area include new charges for some users of the Alexandra Memorial Hall and Molyneux Park.

Board member Brian Fitzgerald queried charges for dance classes in the hall, of $100 an hour for commercial or non-local users (including heating); $50 (commercial, without heating); $60 (amateur/local/non-profit, including heating) and $30 (amateur, no heating).

Mr Fitzgerald said the charges could be hard for dance teachers to recover, but accepted they seemed more reasonable, when other figures for hiring the hall were presented.

He also questioned new charges for athletics groups using the Molyneux Park, of $130 per day or $70 per half day, but council parks and recreation manager Mathew Begg said the charges would not cover the costs of marking out the fields.

The changed fees and charges were approved by board members and will be included in the council's 2017-18 annual plan.
