Debate on swimming programmes and management at Alexandra's Molyneux Aquatic Centre is progressing, with a special meeting of the Vincent Community Board scheduled.
This week, the board discussed whether competing providers of swimming education and safety programmes could continue operating side by side at the facility.
Members could not agree on a solution and a motion was passed to further consider all options and implications during an informal meeting of the board before Christmas, at which detailed cost benefit analysis data would be made available.
It was also resolved a special board meeting would be scheduled in the new year, before the board's next general meeting in February, at which a decision could be made based on outcomes and discussion from the informal deliberation.
At present, a private swimming education provider is contracted to operate at the pool, and until recently had been doing so alone.
Recently the Central Otago District Council began sponsoring an additional water safety and education service, from which tensions between providers and pool user groups and individuals mounted.
Anger and confusion has also been targeted at the pool management over informal arrangements between staff and users, denied or restricted access at certain times due to demand overwhelming availability, and disagreements on fees and charges.
Central Otago District Council chief executive Phil Melhopt said the issues had to be addressed as soon as possible, and a solution formed to set a standard for future management and operation of the facility to satisfy all involved.
