Rates could go up 50% in next decade

The rates bills in Clutha could climb by almost 50% in the next decade, figures from the Clutha District Council's draft long-term council community plan show.

In the next four years alone, rates bills could go up by more than a third.

This is because the council is tackling several key infrastructure projects.

Figures in the draft plan estimate the total rates changes in percentage terms for the coming 10 years.

A general rates rise of 7.04% in the next financial year is proposed.

There are plans to have similar rises over the following three years - 6.87% (2010-11 year), 8.96% (2011-12) and 8.24% in the 2012-13 year; before more modest rises, averaging 2.82%, for the six years to July 2019.

Over the next decade, the council's rate take will climb from just under $20 million this financial year to nearly $30 million by the year 2019.

The figures include a 3% inflation allowance but the exact impact on households will vary, depending on their location.
