Giving back to the community is the reason behind a new greenwaste recycling initiative in Millers Flat.

Hawkeswood Mining site manager Simon Johnstone said an area on the site of the company’s gold mine at Millers Flat had been set aside to receive greenwaste materials. The waste would be chipped and used as mulch on their planting projects in the area.

Anyone was welcome to bring their greenwaste to the mine site during working hours, Mr Johnstone said.

Staff would inspect the waste and direct drivers to the drop-off point.

One of the company’s planting projects involved working with the children from Millers Flat Primary School along the banks of the Tima Burn, a small Clutha River/Mata Au tributary that flows to the southeast of the mine boundary.

It was a fantastic event that brought together Hawkeswood Mining staff, Millers Flat Primary School, Total Energies, and members of the wider community, Mr Johnstone said.

The event finished with Mr Johnstone showing his skills on the bbq for all the hungry helpers.
