Making fixing things fun is on the menu at Cromwell's first Repair Cafe.

It will offer the opportunity to bring small household items to be repaired free by fixers, including an electrician, a welder, a sewer and a handyman.

Organised by Connect Cromwell's George Affleck and Jill Herron, the event is being held at the Cromwell Rugby clubrooms in Anderson Park on Sunday, September 22 from 10am to 4pm.

"We are trying to encourage not being such a disposable society,'' Mrs Affleck said.

Many people had possessions that were "a little bit broken'' and could be repaired.

Plenty of items could be given a new lease of life, either by a simple mend, or by being repurposed to be used in different ways.

The fixers were volunteering their time to "restore items to good health''.

Small appliances, jewellery, musical instruments, bicycles, chairs, crockery, clothing, ceramics and more were types of items that could be repaired.

If it could be carried by one person it could be looked at - "we don't want people bringing in their fridges'', Mrs Affleck said.

Bringing the community together to share and learn new skills was part of the aim.

People would be encouraged to help each other and talk through the process instead of repairs simply being done for them.

"It is fun - you come along and it is social. It is fun to fix things in this environment,'' Mrs Herron said.

Electrical items would be inspected by a certified electrician who had volunteered to be one of the fixers.

"People are really enthusiastic about it. The reaction that we have been getting is that people are saying `what a great idea'.''

The group was seeking more volunteers to be fixers for items such as jewellery, musical instruments and creative repairs - for details email george@connectcromwell.nz
