Wally Sanford was spotted wearing a high-vis vest while clearing weeds from Cromwell’s roundabouts, earning praise from Central Otago District Mayor Tamah Alley in her weekly "Mayor in a Minute" video on social media.
"Huge shout out to Wally who has been doing his bit taking care of the roundabouts in Cromwell while being very safety-conscious as he always is with his high-vis on."
Mr Sanford stressed he did not do the work as a board member, rather as a member of a community that had said the weeding needed doing, and to prove it could be done.
"It was a mess that needed cleaning," he said.
He was joined at the weekend by six other members of the community in his weeding efforts, but still reckoned they got to less than 5% of the weeds around the town.
For health and safety reasons, Mr Sanford was reluctant to organise a proper working bee, although he would not turn away anyone who turned up to help.
He hoped the work to remove weeds from Cromwell’s roundabouts and traffic islands would be completed as a community before Christmas.
"Still a long way to go," he said.
