Outstanding students in Central Otago and Central Lakes were celebrated and rewarded with scholarships by the Central Lakes Trust last week.

At the presentation Paralympic gold medallist Anna Grimaldi shared her personal reflections on resilience and perseverance, encouraging the students to embrace challenges and opportunities as they worked towards their goals.

Trust chairwoman Linda Robertson said it was the 19th year of the scholarships being awarded and it was always inspiring to see the breadth of ambition and talent in the region’s young people.

"Each year we’re amazed to see all the exciting directions our region’s students are heading in — from artificial intelligence to music, nursing, and more. It’s a privilege for CLT to help support them as they take the next step in their journeys."

Following the scholarship awards, the winners of the CLT Art & Design Competition, judged by local artist Dee Copeland, were also announced. The top award went to Lilya Cochrane, from Mount Aspiring College, for her piece ‘Always Look for the Good’.

"We enjoyed the beautiful use of colours and the overall composition is beautifully executed," Ms Copeland said.

Lilya’s artwork would be featured on a commemorative tea towel celebrating CLT’s upcoming 25th anniversary and also appear in the trust’s next annual report. — Allied Media
