This year's Alexandra Blossom Festival was off to a great start yesterday with the crowning of the Alexandra Senior Blossom Festival Queen at the Cellar Door in Alexandra.

Maureen Bush, representing the Alexandra Dunstan Lions Club, was crowned Senior Queen, with Beryl Dittmer, from the Alexandra and District Probus Club and Helen Love, from Central Otago WasteBusters joint runners-up.

Seven contestants entered the competition, which was judged by Barbara Grubb, Bernie Lepper and Don Thompson.

Last year's festival queen, Joy Walsh, handed over her crown after what she described as a great year.

Mayor Malcolm Macpherson said it was great to see the festival in such good heart.

He said these days it was more "festival" than "blossom", and was a time where communities could come together and celebrate.
