It was a ripper of a day as 600 children and parents from throughout Central Otago descended on Molyneux Park for the Greater Alexandra Rippa Rugby Tournament on Thursday.

More than 400 children from 43 teams between years 3 and 8 from schools in Alexandra, Clyde, Cromwell, Millers Flat, Roxburgh, Omakau and Maniototo turned out for the event.

Co-ordinator and Terrace School teacher Matt Murphy said it was a great day enjoyed by all and one of the most popular sports events in Otago.

''I couldn't have asked for better weather ... It went really well and they had a great time.''

The volunteer pupils from Dunstan High School who gave up their time to help referee the games were ''outstanding''.

Teams were made up of seven children, with at least three girls each, and played two halves of seven minutes.

Three qualifying teams from each year group go on to the Central Finals in Frankton on Friday.
