Time takes its toll

Time stood still in Alexandra when the hands on the town’s iconic hillside clock stopped for about a week.

Alexandra Lions Club member Barry McCall said a gear failure was responsible for the breakdown of the 58-year-old clock.

Minor improvements had been made over the years and sadly vandalism was not uncommon and required members’ attention, he said.

The April breakdown was due to a reduction box gear failure.

That type of gearbox was now obsolete and parts unavailable.

A replacement would have required a substantial modification to the structure on the side of a cliff face.

‘‘Fortunately we were able to get replica gears manufactured in Dunedin at short notice.’’

The exact cost had not been finalised but would be covered by Lions fundraising, Mr McCall said.

The clock was designed and built as a Jaycee project in 1968 and involved countless hours of voluntary labour to get it assembled and installed in its challenging location.

Eventually the local Jaycees Club went into recess and the Alexandra Lions Club assumed the role of custodian, Mr McCall said.
