Tramper flown to hospital

The rescue of an injured tramper from the Pisa Range by helicopter yesterday afternoon went like clockwork, police said.

The Christchurch man, in his 30s, was one of a group of five who had been tramping on tracks in the area for several days, Constable Dean Schroder, of Cromwell, said.

The group was on the Cardrona-Cromwell Pack Track, above the Roaring Meg, when the man fell through a hole in the snow into a stream, dislocating his shoulder.

"A helicopter was dispatched from Queenstown [It] landed on the snow and there were no problems getting him out. The weather was fine and it all went very well," Const Schroder said.

"The group was well-equipped and had GPS, which directed the rescuers directly to the spot where the man was."

Emergency services were contacted by a member of the group about 2pm.

One person had stayed with the injured man while the others walked until they had cellphone reception and then called for an ambulance, Const Schroder said.

"They'd called for help because of his injury - it would've been difficult for him to continue on, the way he was."

The group was walking from the Roaring Meg hut to Lowburn.

The man was taken to Lakes District Hospital at Frankton.

No further details were available last night about his condition.
