US researcher to talk about Otago study

An American anthropology researcher will be the guest speaker at the New Zealand Historic Places Trust Central Otago branch committee annual meeting at Alexandra tomorrow.

Edward Gonzalez-Tennant will speak about his research on the Lawrence Chinese camp.

Central Otago branch committee chairwoman Sharon Hinds said the meeting would be held at the Central Stories Museum and Art Gallery from 11.30am.

Mr Gonzalez-Tennant will speak after the committee's scheduled meeting He is the Society for Applied Anthropology student committee communications co-ordinator, and is the Society for Historical Archaeology's research editor for Asia.

Mr Gonzalez-Tennant said he was interested in finding ways to engage modern issues using anthropological methods.

Mr Gonzalez-Tennant first visited New Zealand in 2002 to begin 13 months of research at the University of Otago.

He again visited in 2006, and has been in Dunedin since May.

He returns to the US in December.
