The snow-capped Kakanui Mountains, as seen looking east from near Kyeburn earlier this week following several days of crisp weather in the Maniototo region.

MetService meteorologist Andy Best said more frosty, sunny days were expected this weekend in Central Otago, and the rest of Otago was also looking "pretty good", after a chilly start predicted for today from a southerly pushing up through the country.

Tomorrow would bring scattered rain for Otago and a cold front for Dunedin, "but generally, compared to what we’ve had recently, the weather is markedly improved this weekend", Mr Best said. About 6cm of snow is forecast for the top of Treble Cone Ski Resort, and 3cm for Coronet Peak, tomorrow.
