``With this keen interest comes a sense of reality about the type of species we are dealing with. Many think we could control lake snow but it would not be easy.
``Our beautiful lakes are vast, the cells are microscopic and they are super tough.
``My greatest concern is that in trying to control it we would destroy our lakes. If we killed off this phytoplankton we would kill many, if not all, others.
``The whole lake ecosystem is based on phytoplankton.
``We would not want to kill off all species of these little plants, which produce the oxygen and food to sustain the bugs and the fish.
``They drive the life-supporting capacity of these lakes.
``Councillors have a role in supporting communities. They need to assist in helping communities understand the issue, to understand if it is controllable, how best to manage nuisance effects and I think most importantly to continue to celebrate and promote the wonderful environment our lakes provide.''
