Doubts over control

Gretchen Robertson, an ORC candidate with a science background, has expressed doubts about whether Lakes Wanaka and Wakatipu can be returned to the state they were in before the arrival of lake snow.Ms Robertson has an honours degree in aquatic ecology and has worked as a water quality scientist.

``With this keen interest comes a sense of reality about the type of species we are dealing with. Many think we could control lake snow but it would not be easy.

``Our beautiful lakes are vast, the cells are microscopic and they are super tough.

``My greatest concern is that in trying to control it we would destroy our lakes. If we killed off this phytoplankton we would kill many, if not all, others.

``The whole lake ecosystem is based on phytoplankton.

``We would not want to kill off all species of these little plants, which produce the oxygen and food to sustain the bugs and the fish.

``They drive the life-supporting capacity of these lakes.

``Councillors have a role in supporting communities. They need to assist in helping communities understand the issue, to understand if it is controllable, how best to manage nuisance effects and I think most importantly to continue to celebrate and promote the wonderful environment our lakes provide.''
