Wild weather for South heading into weekend

A belt of heavy weather moving in looks set to bring a wild start to the weekend for many in the South.

MetService said a strong moist northwesterly flow with embedded fronts would affect the South Island tomorrow, Saturday and into Sunday, bringing strong northwesterlies and heavy rain to many areas.

The agency has this morning issued a swathe of severe weather advisories, including orange heavy rain warnings for the headwaters of the Otago lakes and rivers, Fiordland, and the headwaters of the Canterbury lakes and rivers south of the Hurunui River.

A strong wind watch is in place for inland Otago, western Clutha and Southland, where northwest winds may approach severe gale in exposed places from tonight until late morning tomorrow.

While there are no warnings in place for Dunedin at this stage, the forecast is for strong northerlies tomorrow afternoon and evening.

MetService advised people to keep up with forecasts, and said it was likely more warnings and watches would be issued.
